Sylvia Rose Stewart, nee Stanton-Yonge, was born on October 16th 1930 in Punta Arenas, Chile. She was one of five children born to Gustavo Yonge and Florence Hansen.they lived on their farm called Fenton Station at Punta Arenas, with her sisters, Mary, Thelma (chem) Diana (Tish) and brother Edward (Eddy) having left south America mother moved to the farm her Father Gus Yonge bought, called Bluff cove, where she was to spend the majority of her life as a farmer, bringing up 4 children,Lillian (ginge) Gus, Diane & Carol, having sold the farm in the early 80's and moving to 7 fitzroy Road in Stanley, where during the conflict she flitted from Stanley to Fitzroy on a regular basis as all the family moved to the camp to keep brother Gus away as the Argies wanted him to fight their cause, as he was unfortunate to have been born in Argentina, which the Argies considered him a traitor for not fighting their cause. regularly we would travel to stanley using mother as interpretter, and boy did she give them a hard time if they tried to stop her, during the conflict she also went as spanish enterpretter for the British forces in Fitzroy, where she was used to interview the p.o.w that were brought in from the battlefields of Tumbledown etc.at the end of conflict mother and Gus flew to Stanley by gazelle helicopter, purely as mother thought the pilots cute??? to check out what was left of the town, all was well, 2 days later we all returned to the town, mum then ran 7 fitzroy road as a B&B where she had many ITN & BBC reporter stay for as long as 2 weeks at a time, she also had 3 long term Guests from PSA, the house was never empty as it acted as an over spill from the Upland Goose Hotel for several years.even after losing her Rock and best friend husband george, in 1987 she carried on taking in guests and a busy life,at the beginning of 1987 she flew out with her newborn baby grandson Simon Reid, after a complicated birth he was not a well baby so Rose and he went to chile, where he made good progress, then Monte video and eventually to England, as at that time the airbridge to the Falklands wasn't as regular and the Raf very strict, both gran & grandson had to wait until the baby was old enough to eventually go home to meet his parents.she then came accross to the UK in 1989 to see the arrival of Grandson Stephen in Cheltenham, where she was also at last sorted for her thyroid problem that had been undetected for a very long time causing her great anxiety and stress.she then spent a long time in the Uk at the loss of her son in law Jim O'Brien (Seamus),to comfort Carol, then again in 1999/2000 where she came with carol and her 2 children Roisin & Clodagh, to help Carol and care for the little ones when Carol was to finally give birth to her twins, Maired and Byron, mother had a very soft spot for Leeds as she spent nearly a year there, and many places that she stayed when she travelled, as the old bird loved nothing better than to travel.she came to the uk for her last time in 2004 where she spent a month at Melrose St, Anlaby Road,Hull.with us, travelling to leeds, york, scarborough and Bridlington. In 2006 after many heart attacks, she was transfered to Santiago in Chile, where the outcome was better than expected as her arteries were badly damaged, it was thought she wouldnt survive the long by pass operation, but as a typical fighter that she was, she surprised everyone and bounced back, then a few months later she was again to be airmeded to Chile as she had a twisted bowel, where after yet another operation she was soon to be up and cooking on gas as it were, back to the garden, chickens and looking after her babies, which she loved most, so it came as a terrible shock too us all that she departed so quickly and suddenly, when she had been so well and happy and looking forward to her next check up in Santiago in a few weeks.
